If you feel anxious about dental treatment, or you need a longer or more complex procedure, sedation can help you feel calm and relaxed while we look after your teeth.

What is IV sedation?

Conscious sedation uses medication given through a small cannula in your hand or arm to put you into a deeply relaxed state. You stay awake and able to respond, but most patients remember little of their treatment afterwards. It is not a general anaesthetic.

In experienced hands

Our principal dentist, Dr Nasser Syed, holds a Diploma in Conscious Sedation and is Clinical Director of the Manchester Sedation course, where he has trained hundreds of dentists and dental care professionals in IV sedation.

Who can sedation help?

  • Nervous or anxious patients who find dental visits difficult.
  • Patients having longer or more complex treatment, such as implants or extractions.
  • Anyone who would simply like a more relaxed experience in the dental chair.

Your treatment journey

what to expect from sedation.

  • 01

    Assessment

We go through your medical history, check that sedation is suitable for you and explain exactly what will happen on the day.

  • 02

    Your appointment

You’ll need to bring a responsible adult who can take you home and stay with you afterwards. We monitor you closely throughout your treatment.

  • 03

    Recovery

Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. You must not drive, operate machinery or sign important documents for 24 hours, we’ll give you full written aftercare instructions.

FAQs

your questions, answered.

Ask us something else
Will I be asleep?

No. Conscious sedation leaves you deeply relaxed but awake and able to respond to your dentist. Many patients remember very little of the treatment afterwards.

Can I drive home afterwards?

No. You’ll need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you, and you shouldn’t drive for 24 hours after sedation.

Is sedation right for me?

Most adults can have sedation, but it depends on your medical history. We’ll carry out a full assessment before booking your treatment.
